Peru protestors back at Newmont gold mine
After a month of peace, Protestors returned to Newmont gold mines at Cajamarca, Peru, this time alleging the miner to cause water pollution in the areas.
At least 2000 protestors marched towards the Conga gold-and-silver mine and raised slogans that it will taint their water and affect a major aquifer.
Protests restarted against the proposed $4.8 billion gold mine by Newmont Mining after a gap on mone month when dozens of people were injured in clashes with police.
They demanded a new study of the environmental impact of the mine, and are asking the government to facilitate dialogue about the issue.
Cajamarca is one of Peru’s most heavily mined regions and many residents mistrust the new project because it is an extension of nearby Yanacocha mine, Latin America’s largest gold mine, which is nearing the end of production.
Peru’s economy depends heavily on mining, which accounts for 61 percent of its export income. - BullionStreet
