Sudan’s gold production likely to hit 74 tons this year
North Africa’s Sudan said its gold production is likely to hit 74 tons this year.
According to country’s minerals ministry, small-scale prospectors are expected to contribute about 60 tonnes to this year’s total output.
The ministry has issued many regulations systemizing traditional mining and plans to offer incentives to small-scale prospectors to attract them to sell their mined gold in the country and thus make it available to Sudanese citizens.
After South Sudan became an independent nation, the North has to depend on Gold to survive as all its major oil resources were in South after the division.
Sudan’s gold exports grew by 45% in the first quarter of this year. Almost 128 gold mining companies are currently operating in the country.
Sudan produced just 4 tonnes of gold in 2009 and improved the volume to 36 tons in 2010. The nation is on the way to become the third largest gold producer in Africa and tenth in the world. – BullionStreet
